About Swaffham Bulbeck, Cambridgeshire Swaffham Bulbeck is an attractive fen-edge village lying partly within the Cambridge Green Belt. The village began as a farm of settlers from Swabia, then soon after 1066 it became the estate of Hugh of Bolbeck whose house was probably on the site of Burgh Hall within the remains of the main moat. There are prehistoric round barrows and ring ditches at the south east of the parish and at Hare Park a hare warren was set up in 1605 for Royal coursing. The village was also considered of great importance as a port for water-borne trade along Swaffham Bulbeck Lode to fenland waterways and flourished as a trading post from the 17th Century. This success led to the construction of many of the attractive buildings, which give the village its distinctive character. The village contains limited facilities but these do include a primary school, a post office/shop, a pub, a public hall, churches, sports and recreation facilities and daily bus service. |
