About Aldreth, Ely, Cambridgeshire Aldreth is a small compact village having a population of approximately 240, in what is now a somewhat isolated location on the edge of the Fen. The village commands the main ancient causeway into the Isle of Ely and was crucial in its defence against William the Conqueror. After a brief final battle the Normans penetrated the Isle, the last resistance to the Normans in England, and took control. The name Aldreth, is probably a corruption of Etheldreda, but may mean 'loading place by the Alders'. The village is no longer on a main route into the Isle of ely and has only a limited range of facilities; there is no food shop, although there is a church, a meeting room, a public telephone, a veterinary surgery and a bus service which runs through the village only twice a week. The lack of services makes residents of Aldreth dependent on Haddenham for local facilities. |
